The Legend of The Princess and The Mo Mo Zhu*
(aka Carol's Birthday Story)

Once upon a time there was a Beautiful Baby Girl Princess. She knew she was a Princess because that is what her father had always called her. As is fitting with BBGPs she was exceedingly sweet and lovely, but suffered from an enormously shy heart. In fact, she was so shy that when it came time to take her oral exam to go to university, even though she was quite clever and studious, her legs trembled and her voice wavered. She spoke so softly she could not be heard. So, even though she was very bright, she could not pursue her education. She had to go to work instead. But being a Buoyant Baby Girl Princess, she went to work with a light heart and lived as full and joyous a life as she could.

After a few years, something happened that changed her life. A hairy, shaggy, bearded, crumpled-clothed, blue-eyed, Mo Mo Zhu like creature came to the office where she worked and claimed to have swam across the sea, just to chase this beautiful princess(actually he had hitched a ride on a big bird because, truth be told, he couldn't swim very well at all).

Sure enough, as soon as the BBGP saw the MMZ creature she grew frightened and ran away. But run as she might, the lumbering MMZ creature followed her. He followed her up to the Peak. He followed over to the Western district. To Queensway. To the Mid-Levels where she lived with her family. He even followed her out to the countryside and into the shopping malls.

Of course the BBGP could outrun the MMZ creature. She had long strong beautiful legs whereas he had only stubby MMZ legs, but he seemed very determined to pursue her wherever she went. After a while, when she realised she was much faster and smarter than him, and that he could not possibly catch her unless she let him, she began to relax and started to have fun. For as you know, shy BBGPs tend to be very lonely, and she enjoyed the company. She began running just fast enough to stay ahead, but not so fast as to get out of his sight.

When the MMZ creature realised he could never hope to catch BBGP he started writing her letters, proclaiming that he had a true heart and never ending love. And though BBGP was very suspicious of strange creatures, she thought to give him a chance. She wrote a note back to him that she would meet him and talk to him, but only in a safe and familiar place, a noodle shop where she was well known.

When she got to the noodle shop she found the MMZ creature waiting. And, much to her amusement, he had tried to disguise himself as a normal person. He had on a shirt and tie and slacks and shoes and even socks(even though the socks were mis-matched and the tie would never go with the shirt he wore). She went in to the restaurant and sat down with him. Being a shy girl, she let the MMZ creature do most of the talking. He tried to impress her with stories of his adventures and knowledge.

All the time the BBGP listened quietly and nodded her pretty head as the MMZ endeavoured to appear sophisticated and smart. But she kept laughing to herself because he was so misinformed in his supposed knowledge(e.g., he tried to tell her Flamingos change colour with the weather and that he was an accomplished actor in his own country.) She also noticed he hardly knew how to use chopsticks at all. By the time the meal was over, he had stained his shirt and pants with the noodles and soup. But she also found she kind of liked this MMZ creature, so when he asked her to see him again she said, "Okay, but only in a safe place."

And so it went for some time. And gradually the BBGP lost all fear of the MMZ creature. When they went shopping she tried to teach him what colours went with what and how to properly tie a tie. As time went on the MMZ creature didn't seem so creature-ish anymore. He seemed almost harmless, except for being clumsy and temperamental at times.

In fact, the BBGP found that she began to feel more and more comfortable talking to the MMZ and even started correcting his more serious blunders.

"Remember, it takes two," she told him when he began philosophizing about true love.

"Please remember the tissue," she would tell him when they went out to eat, knowing that he was awkward with his food.

And as she became more comfortable with the MMZ she started being a little less shy. One day she got the idea of going back and applying for college again. She ran to tell the MMZ.

The MMZ said, "That's a GREAT idea, BBGP."

"Of course it is," answered BBGP. "But I'm still a little scared."

"Oh, don't you worry about it, BBGP," said the MMZ. "You'll do fine."

And the MMZ's encouragement gave the BBGP that little bit of confidence she needed to try again. Sure enough, she got into college this time. Not only that, she became a model student and was looked up to with admiration by her fellow students. Not surprisingly, the two things the shy BBGP now excelled at was 1) listening---after all the practice with the MMZ and 2) speaking to groups of people. Though she was still shy, she found she had a real talent in presenting her ideas.

And so she was proud of herself. And the MMZ was proud of her too.

Then one evening, walking along the pier on Peng Chau Island, where the Mo Mo Zhu lived, along with several cats, dogs and other strange but friendly creatures, the MMZ asked BBGP to let him kiss her. "I really believe if I kiss you I'll turn from an awkward, unsophisticated MMZ into a handsome prince," he said.

So BBGP, being a kindly and gentle BBGP, allowed the MMZ to kiss her. But sadly, the MMZ didn't become handsome or sophisticated at all. He was just the same old MMZ. And the MMZ became very sad.

BBGP looked at the MMZ and felt very sad for him as well. But then she realised something. He had changed. Bit by bit. Day by day. He had been transformed.

"Don't worry MMZ," said the Princess. "It's true you didn't become a handsome prince. But look! Your socks match now. And you don't walk around with your fly open(not all the time anyway). You aren't an MMZ any more. Why, you're an MMZ Teddy. An MMZT!"

Then BBGP leaned over and kissed the newly dubbed MMZT again.

"And I love you," she added.

"I love you too, BBGP," responded MMZT. And so the Princess and her Teddy walked off into the beautiful sunset together, talking philosophy and telling funny stories all the while.
